Sueño Latinx is a club at John O’Connell High School who has 15 active members since being created August of 2015. Students in the club help each other, their school, and community in empowering them by providing safe spaces for Latinx identifying individuals. Recently Sueno Latinx applied for a 5k Youth Empowerment Fund (YEF) grant for the 2019 spring semester. YEF is an initiative ran in partnership with Urban Services YMCA of San Francisco (www.ymcasf.org/urban). YEF runs programs and creates opportunities that empower San Francisco’s youth to be citywide change-makers and celebrates their outstanding leadership.

With the support of Jill & Wilber from John O’Connell College and Career Center, Sueño Latinx was able to complete YEF’s grant application. The student organization was awarded the full $5,000 to support their initiatives in the Latinx community. The group intends on using the YEF grant for their largest event, Latinx Family Day. Latinx Family Day is an event where students and their families can receive school-related support through a college fair and various workshops. This grant will allow the group to expand Latinx Family Day to reach more community members with the goal of making college the expectation not the exception. Way to go!
