Growing Through Support: A Marshall Elementary Success Story

Since kindergarten, Joaquin Leiva has been part of Marshall Elementary’s Extended Day Program, where his journey reflects the transformative power of comprehensive student support. His story demonstrates how addressing social-emotional needs creates a foundation for academic success.

In his early days, managing emotions was a challenge. The program staff found creative ways to help: Program Director Miss B introduced sparkling water with bubbles that fascinated him and helped redirect his attention, while Assistant Program Director Miss Daisy worked with him on breathing exercises and taking breaks when needed.

Now in fourth grade, Joaquin has discovered multiple paths to success. On the soccer field with Coach Alberto, he’s found a positive way to channel his energy. “Soccer always makes me feel better,” he says. In the classroom, he tackles complex math problems with growing confidence, mastering multiplication through the traditional area model.

For his mother, Maria Leiva, the changes go far beyond academics. “Through this program, I see Joaquin becoming a better human and student every single day,” she shares. “The values of respect and kindness he learns here, I see him practicing them at home with his little sisters—caring, sharing, and being that positive light.”

The program provides crucial academic support for Joaquin, whose family speaks Spanish at home. “Being part of this program, I’ve seen his growth in speaking more English,” Maria notes. “I cannot help him with academic support at home, but he has all the tools he needs here.”

Perhaps most importantly, the program has created a true sense of community. “Marshall is one big family,” Maria says. “My children are here from breakfast club at 7:30 until closing at 6:00—they love it so much. As a mother, knowing they’re safe, happy, and truly loved by the staff means everything.”

Looking ahead, Maria sees how this comprehensive support is shaping Joaquin’s future. While he “switches dream professions daily,” she’s noticed his growing interest in helping others. “Through his growth and the support here, I can see him going into education or social work—being that support for someone else in need.”

Joaquin’s story exemplifies how Mission Graduates’ Extended Day Program supports the whole child, creating an environment where academic achievement and personal growth go hand in hand.
