Programs » Tutoring Center

Our flagship program, The Tutoring Center (TC) is an award-winning after-school academic enrichment program serving 120 children K-5 year-round. It includes service learning components, health and nutrition, and sports and recreation programming.

The Tutoring Center operates at Marshall Elementary School, primarily serving young people ages 5-11. Youth who participate in the TC develop a sense of self-confidence in their ability to learn, to speak their voice and to contribute to their community. The program infuses "college messaging" throughout its curriculum to ensure both children and parents alike begin visualizing early for the college experience.

Volunteers
Community volunteers, young and old, give generously of their time, knowledge and friendship in one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions. Youngsters and their tutors do more than work together on homework assignments; together they cook, read aloud, paint, make puppets, sculpt clay, write stories and play baseball. Volunteers also help with our sidewalk sales, chaperone field trips and cook food for events. Their ongoing commitment and support are the backbone of our program, directly contributing to increased learning, support and safety.

Support Groups
During the school year, youth ages 10-12 and their siblings participate in weekly groups to openly discuss issues related to teen pregnancy, such as puberty, self-esteem and identity issues. These groups address youth-expressed needs to talk in a nurturing, respectful setting about the often-confusing feelings and experiences they have growing up in a challenging urban environment.

Parents
The TC supports parents and caregivers of Marshall Elementary School students by providing a variety of workshops, resources and school/community events. The Parent Center serves as a gathering place for increasing parent involvement, planning future events, obtaining community resources, and utilizing computers for career development. Weekly bilingual parent workshops offer support in understanding and accessing community resources and social services, as well as continuing parent education. Monthly community dinners offer a forum to network with other parents, school staff and community members, and dialogue about safety issues that affect students and families.
