Programs » Talking Circles (T*Circ)
We launched Talking Circles (T*Circ) in 2000 to address disproportionately high teen pregnancy rates in the Mission District and address gaps in sexuality education in Mission schools. Our goals are to reduce teen pregnancy and STI rates; support college access; and increase community leadership skills.
Using youth development principles, we apply the following strategies in Mission schools, after school and community sites:
T*Circ: Groups
We provide 12-14 weeks of comprehensive sex education in Mission schools to equip youth with the information and skills they need to make informed and healthy decisions. The curriculum covers future planning/college access; relationships; physiology/anatomy; birth control and safe sex methods; STI and HIV prevention; sexuality and gender; and sexual decision making, communication and negotiation skills.
Youth Peer Education
We hire and train youth to plan and facilitate sex education and future planning/college access workshops for their peers, amongst other prevention activities.
Promotores/Parent Education
Our Promotores are trained, parent health educators. They provide workshops on sex education, communicating with youth about sex and reproductive health, FamilyPACT and clinic services, and support youth college access to other Mission District parents.
Clinic Access
Staff, youth peer educators and Promotores connect youth to FamilyPACT/clinic/area reproductive health services through outreach, education, and field trips.
Male Engagement
We provide male-specific comprehensive sex education and work with young men to plan teen pregnancy and STI prevention activities.
Community Partnerships
Our partners include teachers, administrators and Wellness Center staff; clinic and CBO staff and peer educators, in particular Mission Neighborhood Health Center's Latinos en Extasis, Planned Parenthood Golden Gate's Promotores, and Family Service Agency's TRAPP. Programs. T*Circ staff also provide leadership for The Mission Teen Pregnancy Prevention Collaborative.
